Dear Family and Friends,

As many of you may already know, Maynard was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in May 2023. At this time there is no known cause or cure for ALS. So far, the disease is continuing to progress slowly for which we are thankful. We are still able to walk about 5,000 steps most mornings. Maynard has taken a few falls but hasn’t sustained any serious injuries

Every 3 months we attend an ALS multidisciplinary clinic at Kaiser Hospital in San Diego and receive incredible one-on-one attention and care which can last up to 3 hours. We feel heard and cared for by the medical team.

Last fall we attended our first San Diego ALS Walk at DeAnza Cove Park in Mission Bay as individual walkers. There were probably over 2,000 walkers and over $500,000 was raised for ALS. We experienced bittersweet emotions that morning…sadness and joy. We decided then that in 2024 we wanted to assemble our own team for the Walk and the fundraiser. We were convinced that it was a very worthwhile cause and have committed to doing so under the team name “Sager All Stars”.

We invite you to be a member of our team. If you so choose to participate there are 2 ways you can join in the event. 1. Please join us in the Walk. 2. Donate online. In addition, please pray for us, our team, the hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, the weather, the parking and other details of the event. All of the funds raised through this event will be used to provide critical services to help ALS patients, along with their families, to be able to live life as fully as possible. These are offered at no charge and include an equipment loan closet, social work assistance, support groups, conferences and workshops, speech evaluation and respite care. ALS Greater SD keeps all its funds in San Diego helping our San Diego ALS community. You will also receive a receipt for your donation for tax purposes.
