Why I Walk: For Every Breath, Every Moment, Every Patient

This year, I’m walking in the ALS San Diego Fundraiser Walk, and I want to share why this means so much to me—not just as a participant, but as someone who's walked this road in more ways than one.

As a respiratory therapist in the UC Outpatient ALS Clinic, I don’t just work with patients—I walk beside them through one of the most difficult journeys anyone can face. From the moment of diagnosis, I become part of their world:

Helping them breathe a little easier

Sitting with them through hard conversations

❤ Laughing with them, crying with them, and finding moments of joy

And sometimes… saying goodbye too soon

This walk isn’t just a fundraiser for me. It’s a tribute to every patient who trusted me with their care, to every family who welcomed me into their story, and to every breath we fought to preserve.

That’s why I’m walking with my incredible team—Team Vital Capacity—alongside my fellow UC Outpatient Respiratory Therapy colleagues. We’re walking for those we’ve lost, those still fighting, and for a future with more hope, more treatment, and one day, a cure.
