Welcome to Justin's page for my Dad.
Hello family and friends.
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. I'm participating in ALS San Diego's ALS Walk to raise funds that will support San Diego individuals and families affected by ALS. I am walking for my Dad, Chris Palmer, who was diagnosed with ALS 5 years ago.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone regardless of age, gender, nationality, or ethnicity, although it is primarily an adult-onset disease. Currently there is no known cause or cure.
My Dad has always been an active person, whether at home, at work, or at leisure, he was getting things done. I have great memories of driving around town with Dad and my brother in the Datsun 280zx while we learned to shift the manual transmission with the left hand. But my Dad's favorite pastime was always riding bicycles, one he definitely shared and passed on to me. Dad could spin for miles in the Santa Monica Mountains, which are hard in any direction, and would turn back around to get any stragglers back to the group. After moving to San Diego, he kept riding until the early symptoms of ALS made it clear that riding was no longer an option. Every mile I put in until I no longer can will be dedicated to Pops, and I can't pedal without thinking of him.
Dad has also spent the last 30 years of his life helping individuals going through hard times. When he was diagnosed with ALS, my Dad began using his voice that had helped so many others, to help new ones. He spent tireless hours on the phone advocating for himself and others, and learning as much as he can about available resources. The VA has been heavily involved in my Dad's diagnosis and care, which takes a lot of time to navigate.
My mom has been the main caregiver to my Dad, and she deserves a special mention. It's a lot of hard work to care for someone who is progressing with this disease.
Being a part of ALS San Diego's Walk is the number one way to unite and fundraise for those living with ALS. Please consider supporting my efforts by donating through my fundraising page, and please consider coming out to walk with me in Liberty Station on Saturday 9/20!
Your donation today will help fund resources and services to the local San Diego ALS community, help find new treatments, and move us closer to a world without this disease. Please feel free to send this page to any friend or family member who might be interested in donating!
