Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for visiting our fundraising page. We’re walking in ALS San Diego’s ALS Walk, driven by love and a deep desire to support those in our community who are affected by this devastating disease.
We walk for Hector Huerta, a man whose love, laughter, and hard work have touched countless lives.
Hector was born beside a river in Sinaloa, Mexico, in 1950. The eldest of seven siblings, and half-brother to many more, Hector learned early on the importance of family and community. In 1970, he moved to New York, where he met and fell in love with a beautiful Puerto Rican woman named Evelyn. They married in 1975 and soon made San Diego their home. Hector poured his heart and soul into founding H&M Wrought Iron Factory, and today, you can’t drive down a street in San Diego without seeing the beauty and strength of his work.
Hector is not just a skilled craftsman but also a devoted father to three daughters—Lizz, Deanna, and Christina—and a proud grandfather to four. His life has been one of joy, laughter, and love. Hector has always been the kind of person who could make anyone smile, a man whose jokes and stories brightened even the darkest of days. His passion for music led him to play the guitar nearly every day, filling his home with melodies that reflected his vibrant spirit. Since 1979, his garden has been his sanctuary—a place where he planted roots, literally and figuratively, nurturing both his family and his beloved fruit trees. Now, as he battles ALS, he still finds solace in his garden, surrounded by the life he’s cultivated.
But ALS has taken so much from Hector. The disease has gradually stolen his ability to do the things he loves most. Yet, through it all, Hector remains a beacon of strength, cared for with unwavering love by Evelyn, his daughters, and a community that cherishes him.
ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a cruel and relentless enemy. It robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe, with no known cause or cure. For those diagnosed, the average life expectancy is heartbreakingly short—just 2 to 5 years. It’s a disease that doesn’t discriminate; it can strike anyone at any time.
By participating in ALS San Diego’s Walk, we aim to bring hope to those living with ALS. Your donation can make a real difference, funding vital resources and services for the San Diego ALS community, helping to find new treatments, and bringing us closer to a world free of this disease.
Please consider supporting us by donating through our fundraising page. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to a cure.
And if Hector’s story touches your heart, we encourage you to share this page with others who might feel the same.
Thank you, from all of us who love Hector, for your support.
